COMMERCIAL KITCHEN
The renovated old school cafeteria kitchen facility offers a new commercial kitchen
that is available for public use. It is an NCDA inspected and Sanitation Graded
facility featuring modern kitchen equipment and cooler or dry storage space. The
kitchen may be used to prepare food for personal use, retail sale or catering
purposes, make value-added agricultural products, teach or take a class, host
your own party or a variety of other purposes.
The base rate for leasing the
commercial kitchen is $10 per hour, with discounts available for long-term
use. Additional fees for training, special use equipment and storage may apply.
For reservations and more information about the kitchen, call Kitchen Director
Margaret Evans at 828-479-1466.
GROUNDS AND GARDEN TRAIL
The property grounds include an outdoor pavilion, family picnic areas
and a childrens play area. Also included on the grounds is a wonderful
Native Azalea Garden. The azaleas, from the private collection
of the late Sally DeGroot, bring outstanding beauty to the grounds
in the early spring.
The property is surrounded by a quarter-mile
long garden trail. A master plan for development of the trail is
in the design phase now and will be implemented in the coming years.
The
pavilion and grounds may also be leased for private parties and events.

MAIN BUILDING
The main building, formerly the old school house, was built about 1927
and served the community well until it closed in 1994. The building
is currently on the NC Study List of Historic Places and hopefully
will be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the future.
On-going renovation efforts have converted
the abandoned building into a vibrant, thriving center of the community
once again.
The building is home
to many Center sponsored programs including the SOS/JAM after-school
program and the Stecoah Artisans Gallery. The historic stage hosts the summer
performing arts series An Appalachian Evening, the annual Mountain
Music Championship, Folkmoot and other events. Smoky Mountain Native
Plants Association, and the Stecoah Valley Weavers Foundation also call the main building home.
Certain
portions of the main building, including the historic stage, may be leased
for public or private events. Please contact Center staff for more information
and rates.
GYMNASIUM AND KITCHEN
The gymnasium was built about 1950. The main portion of the gym and the
locker room wing have not yet been renovated. While architectural plans
for renovation are in the schematic design phase now, this part of
the gym remains closed to public use due to its present condition.
However,
progress has been made. In 2005 the cafeteria wing (above right) of the gymnasium
was completely renovated and is now home to the Stecoah Valley Food Ventures
program. This program offers a commercial kitchen that is available for
public use to start or grow a small food industry business as well as
a conference/meeting and banquet room.
